NEU 31 - office and appartment09. Aug2011
NEU 31 house combines offices and apartments in a symbiotic form of living.
Superblock purchased the land and developed the building and after the completion, the apartments were sold to like-minded people given the fact that the garden is used collectively. At the moment the house NEU 31 accommodates 22 working and residing persons, 1 dog and 2 cats.

The site area located in Wien, Neuwaldegger street 31, connects the "city" part with the "country" part of the city through a narrow strip going underneath the building at the ground level. The north side facade is facing the busy street Neuwaldegger while the south side offers an unobstructed view of the surrounding Vienna woods. In between these two sides is this conical site area with 15-17 m wide and 82 m depth.
In the center of the house there is a large open top 30m2 courtyard that connects visually all levels and supplies the house with daylight. The two side apartments of the upper floors have two-story living areas that are above the glass and encourage light into the deep floor plans. The apartments all have spacious two-storey south-facing terraces that give the house a unique open structure.
The concept was to create four floors of a permeable structure, which still provide privacy and integrate the functions of living and working. The ground floor should be revived and represents a unique space for the street scene. The first two floors combine, similar to a communicating vessel, the requirements of a family residence with an architectural office. Three similar duplex flats were fitted in the third floor.
To Neuwaldegger street the house is covered in fish-shape white aluminum, extending from the roof to the ground and punched from time to time by large windows. Thus, the facade does'nt need a gutter anymore and the house cleans itself with every rain.
