ZIG ZAG Redux chair29. May2012
New York furniture designer-builder Peter Harrison is introducing his interpretation of the classic Zig Zag chair which was first presented by Gerrit Rietveld in 1934.
Called the Zig Zag Redux, it is the first chair to be added to Harrison’s collection and his first piece of furniture to have a historical reference. Harrison’s chair shines with his signature aluminum joinery. Harrison finished the chair with a brilliant red lacquer, a bold color that accentuates his bold design.
Zig Zag Redux is 15" wide, 18" deep, and 31" tall. It is made from maple and available in a black or red lacquer finish. The design is strong enough to serve as a stand‐alone focal point in a room and versatile enough to be used as dining chairs. Visit Peter Harrison for more information on his design.
Harrison chose the Zig Zag chair because the original design is congruent with the pieces Harrison makes today, providing a perfect leaping point for Harrison to add his signature joinery. The original zig zag chair was the first chair in time not to use legs; which is consistent with Harrison’s designs which seldom use legs. The original chair was also a structural challenge which Harrison saw as a great fit for his method of joinery. "I wanted to make a version of the Zig Zag chair using my signature joinery,” said Harrison. "In building the chair I gained a new respect for the extreme structural challenges that Rietveld faced."---
Each joint is machined from a solid block of aluminum to exacting standards.---
The joinery is structural and visually defines the chair as a Harrison original.---
The joints are meticulously crafted and create a sophisticated level of detailing that take the chair to a new place.---
The original Zig Zag chair designed by Gerrit Rietveld. The chair is using only four elements joined with a system of dovetailing, providing visual simplicity belies a relatively complex construction.
Zig Zag chair built in 1934, is an expression of the "De Stijl" movement and is included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art. Made of natural cherry, Zig Zag can serve as a chair or a side table. Cassina is the exclusive licensed and authorized manufacturer of Gerrit Rietveld designs world-wide. Each piece is numbered with an engraved signature and comes with certification to verify its authenticity.
